Calling bluffs and the consequences?

You begin the chapter with “…we wanted to apprise the readers of the consequences…”.

Then you mention a specific case, “…acquaintance who bluffed his way into LinkedIn as a Staff Software Engineer, upgraded from his original offer of Senior Software Engineer. He outright lied about a non-existent competing offer…”

How can a hiring manager or sourcer protect against that kind of bluff?
What were the consequences?
