N is the number nodes or replicas?

Isnt it better to say N is ‘Number of replicas’? rather than the number of Nodes?
because a cluster might have 1000 nodes, and a replication factor of 3, then R+W > NumberOfReplicas, makes sense to me

Here, N represents the number of Nodes in the Quorum not the actual number of nodes or replicas in the cluster.

okay… can you give me an example where N is different from the ‘number of replicas’?

Some time a node may contains A replica, B replica, C primary, D primary, then it’s a node or replica?
They’re two concepts, don’t confuse them together.

This video by Martin Kleppman helped me understand

It’s still not clear to me what Grokking means by N though. I would assume when they reference r + w > n they are referring to the same formula that Martin is, in which case it seems n is the number of replicas. So is N “the total number of nodes in the cluster”? Is N “nodes in the quorum group”? Is N “the number of replicas”?
